All I ever wanted to do was argue in front of judges and juries because there’s no greater profession than being a trial lawyer.

In tiny Waynesville, North Carolina, where I grew up, I felt a calling that caused me to tag along with a local attorney as a teenager. The legal system is a pillar of any community, small or large, urban or rural, and I took every opportunity to touch it and learn what I could about its contours.

Finally old enough, I attended the University of South Carolina School of Law where I served as President of the American Constitution Society and was a member of the Student Section of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

I spent the first part of my career handling every kind of criminal case from petty theft to serious felonies. Seeking a new challenge, I made the transition to civil litigation and still find the courtroom is my favorite place to work.

I’m proud of the amount of courtroom experience I put under my belt so quickly in my legal career. I’m even more proud of the times I took a case another attorney said was “unwinnable” and then won.

A trial isn’t just about putting on a show. It’s about solving real problems for real people. That’s what I do, and I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.
